Local gig rowing clubs tasted a string of successes at last weekend’s Clovelly Regatta.

Ilfracombe ended the event as overall champions, while Torridge took four victories on Saturday.

The annual event took place under perfect rowing conditions, with the veterans' races kicking things off.

Both the men's and ladies' events were won by Torridge, whose crews put in stellar performances to give their club a flying start.

Appledore then got on the board, too, winning the keenly-contested ladies' B race. The men's B race followed, and it was Torridge again who set the pace from the off to claim a fine victory.

The ladies' A was the first event won by an Ilfracombe crew - and the victory came in some style.

Right from the off, the ladies had their noses in front, and powerful rowing after the first buoy turn saw them surge clear of the rest of the field. Ilfracombe's men's A crew then claimed third in their race.

There was further success to follow for Ilfracombe, as the ladies' supervets notched another win for the club.

Much like the A crew before them, they powered away from the chasing pack to cruise to the finish line.

The men's supervets proved a closer affair, and it was Torridge who edged out Ilfracombe for first place.

The overall regatta victory was then sealed for Ilfracombe by the club's juniors.

The 'Waveriders' won both the under 14 and U16 races, beating Barnstaple and Bude to the line respectively.
