The 2014 Devon County Water polo Knock-out Finals were held in Barnstaple on Sunday, with success for the home club’s under-15s.
The home side overcame Paignton 9-2 with a very strong second-half showing.
Captain Milly Wordley scored top with six goals, while Florence Moore, Danny Roberts and Alice Dobbs all made their way onto the score sheet.
Goalkeeper Harry Longin made numerous crucial saves, while Miles Miller, Charlie Taylor, Jacob Allchorn and Andrew Morgan linked attack and defence admirably.
Barnstaple had to settle for runners-up medals in the U19s final, though, as they were beaten 13-10 by Exeter.
Late withdrawals through illness left Barnstaple with the minimum seven players, but they started strongly and were 6-2 up by half-time thanks to three goals each from Sam Wordley and Will Hutchens.
Exeter’s larger squad size then began to tell, however, and despite a goal from Tom Hutchens they eased into a two-goal lead by the end of the third quarter.
Barnstaple continued to tire, and ultimately came up just short.
In the final match of the day, Newton Abbot were surprise 14-10 winners over Exeter in the senior final.
