North Devon Yacht Club in Instow hosted the National Championship of the Sport 15 Catamarans in the Taw and Torridge estuary over three days from Friday to Sunday. More than 40 racers battled against each other over six races in severe wind conditions to become the UK champion. Friday's racing started early in Force 5 winds, which strengthened all day. There were many capsizes and pitch-poles, but all racers made it home safely. Next day conditions were slightly less windy and local club veteran Mike Rainer gained two top 10 finishes. Sunday brought the most severe conditions, with half the fleet dropping out. The championship was won by a visitor from the Isle of Wight and the first local boat home was sailed by Pete "The Penguin" Ewing. There were also first places for North Devon in the cadet, ladies' and veterans' classes.Results: 1st overall, Robin Leather, Gurnard SC; 2nd Kevin Dutch, Seasalter SC; 3rd Martin Scott, Gurnard SC; 4 th Steve Sandford, Rutland SC. 1st local,Pete Ewing, NDYC; 1st cadet, Alex Raymont, NDYC; 1st lady, Annette Maddison NDYC; 1st veteran, Mike Rainer NDYC.
