A SPECIMEN conger eel went a long way for Barnstaple angler Andy Joslin as he scooped three placings in separate competitions at the weekend. The 21lb 5 3/4 ounce (106.7%) fish took first in the monthly North Devon League match and put the Barnstaple Rod 'n' Reelers team into joint first place alongside Triple Hook A.Second went to Stuart Webber with a dogfish of 2lb 13 1/4 oz and third to Rick Eavis with a rockling of 1lb 5 1/4.But the eel was not the best fish of the night and slithered into second at the earlier Rod 'n' Reelers weigh-in - beaten by the unexpected sight of a specimen spurdog of 4,100 grams (9lb 3/4 oz) or 113% caught by Mickey Mallows. Third went to Tony Werner with a dogfish of 1,215g or 89%.The eel was back in favour at the Combe Martin SAC weigh-in, taking first over the dogfish of John Avery, 2lb 11 1/2 oz, and Kevin Legge, 2lb 4oz. The North Devon League is now incredibly close, with just two heats left to go - Triple Hook A and Barnstaple Rod 'n' Reelers perch at the summit on 45 points, with Triple Hook B not far behind on 42, followed by Combe Martin A 38, Bideford A 34, CM B 33, Appledore 32 and Soul Brothers 9.The next one is on Saturday, March 15, with Sunday's weigh-in hosted by Triple Hook at the Ex-Servicemen's Club in Barnstaple.
