TWO Combe Martin boxers reached the Western Counties Southern Division finals at the weekend - and a third has gone marching on. Popular Combe Martin ABC member Valentin Bumbul, 24, was crowned the Southern Division champion by walkover and will contest the Western Counties Championship tomorrow (Thursday) in Torbay.Clubmates Joe Davis and Tommy Herd both won through to their respective finals, but it was not to be for them this year.Joe, 22, gritted his teeth in the closing moments of his semi-final against Ben Smith from Oakmead after suffering a shoulder injury, but had done enough in the earlier rounds to ensure a good victory. He was denied a crack at the title after the ringside doctor decided to pull him out of the competition. Tommy Herd recently moved into the four by two minute round division and raised his game for a gritty semi-final against Robert Smith of Lympstone. His opponent in the final was the experienced Adam Tanner from Truro, who has an impressive record of 16 wins and only one defeat. Tom, an 18-year-old trainee Ilfracombe carpenter, began well, but was caught by a right hand to the head and the referee stepped in.Now it is up to Norbord machine operator Valentin to carry the torch onwards.
