SOUTH Molton side Headgate Tufters gave a battling performance to reach the final 32 of the Blackthorn British Skittles Championships.

With a 35-pin deficit after their first leg away to the Jammy Little Sods from Torquay, the South Molton side produced a tremendous home performance to book their place in the final stages of the competition.

The turning point came in the fourth rub, which they won by a decisive 101-65, and they eventually went on to win by 20 pins on aggregate.

The two match scores were: JLS 402, Headgate Tufters 367; headgate Tufters 472, JLS 417.

The team of Mike Jones (capt), Mike Seviour, Mike Tarr, Andrew Tapp, Alan Tapp, Henry Hayes, Tony Pickard, Matt Brown, Jim White, Dave Barrow and Ashley Jones now head to Torquay's Riviera International Conference Centre on September 18 for the climax of this year's competition and hopes of bettering last year's semi-final exit.
