BIDEFORD scraped home 13-9 at Saltash in a Cornwall & Devon game that stayed in the balance until the final whistle.

Bideford led 8-6 at half time after opening the scoring with a penalty from Chris Snell.

Home full-back Mawgan Toms kicked a penalty of his own to level, then Bideford full-back Mark Schofield touched down the first of his two tries after a run from his own half.

Toms narrowed it again with his second penalty and Ashes went up a gear after the break with Toms' third kick putting them ahead.

Bideford's winning score came in the 65th minute: Ashes tried to clear their lines and from open play the ever-watchful Schofield was on hand to finish off a wide three-quarter handling move.

Bideford receive St Austell at King George's this Saturday.
