BARNSTAPLE Rod 'n' Reelers capped off a good year following their North Devon League win with a fine showing at the weekend's Champion of Champions competition.Darren Short took both first and second places, with a good bull huss of 9lb 13 1/2 ounces (109.37%) giving him top spot and a dogfish of 2lb 9 3/4 good enough for second.Rod 'n' Reelers member Steve Baker won the Also Rans competition with a good rockling of 1lb 10oz (108.33%.)Although a team effort, the club's league success owed a great deal to team member Andy Joslin, who took an impressive four first places from 10 league heats. The League AGM followed the weigh in and it has been decided to remove tope from the specimen list to help conserve the species, agreed by majority decision to bring in a ban rather than implement a catch and release policy. The new season begins with the first heat on Saturday, June 21, with the weigh in on Sunday 22 at Rolle Quay public house, Barnstaple, hosted by Rod 'n' Reelers.
