A large contingent of Bideford Reds juniors and veterans were in action at the first of the winter head races at Totnes last weekend.

The time trial style race was held over three divisions, which gave competitors the opportunity of racing more than once in different sized boats, with the first race on the incoming tide producing the fastest times of the day and the later divisions getting progressively slower.

The steady progress being made by the club was highlighted by six class wins, five in the junior classes.

In the first division the new Junior 16 double combination of Kieryn Gayson and Drew MacKenzie were nearly one minute ahead of their nearest challengers, recording a time of 11 mins 34 secs.

The pair then linked up with Alex Ferriday and Adam Crowther, plus cox Miles Lemer, to finish as the top Junior 16 4+ crew.

Junior 14 single sculler Nic Wilson came home in top spot in his race, despite racing for the first time in a single.

There were two further junior class wins in Division 3, where the Junior 14 quad of Dan Crowther, Matt Harris, Eden Brittle, Nic Wilson and cox Abby Dunn recorded a time of 13 .41 and the girls Junior 2x crew of Kirsty Snow and Libbie Willis just edged out their clubmates Charlotte Berry and Jess Cox by four seconds in a time of 14 mins 53 secs

The Masters (veteran) four of Ali Peake, Dave Godfrey, Dave Powe and Dave Bates, with cox Meegan MaCabe, were also in impressive form, winning both the Masters C (av age 43) and Master D (av age 50) categories in times of 10 mins 49 secs in Division 1 and 12 mins 06 secs in the Division 3.

Their times enable the experienced four to finish fourth overall from 65 crews in the first division and fifth overall from 69 crews in the third race.
