It was fitting Michael Squires should land the only eligible fish during Bideford Angling Clubs away day to Chesil Beach. Club members were fishing the Michael Squires Memorial Trophy in memory of his father, but fishing was slow at the famous venue. In a catch-and-release event, members landed small smoothound, dogfish and other bits and pieces, but Michaels 10lb 12oz fish was the only one above the qualifying weight of 60 per cent. Sundays open match at Stafford Moor was held on Tanners and Woodpecker lakes. A total of 31 fished and once again it rained all day. Winner was Dave Stockton, who fished Woodpecker on peg six and landed 176lb 11oz, second went to Tim Hagg at peg three on Woodpecker with 123lb 11oz and third went to Keith Needham at Tanners peg three with 94lb 8oz. Fridays match on Tanners Lake was won by Dave Parry on peg three, with 120lb 2oz, fishing 8mm pellet and paste on the bomb. Wayne Grinney had 17 carp up to 22lb 11oz from Beatties Lake in 48 hours using home made boilies. Mat Mitchell also had 13 out from Beatties in 48 hours, taking fish up to 30lb 1oz. At Blakewell, as the water temperature moves towards 12 degrees the fish are up in the water and very near the surface, so a floating line is all you need. Buzzers and nymphs are continuing to be a favourite with green, olive and claret high up on the trouts menu.
