Schools from North Devon took part in Goldcoast’s annual surfing competition

The education day at Goldcoast Oceanfest saw the return of the North Devon Schools Surfing Championships.

More than 60 junior competitors gathered on Croyde beach for the competition, now in its 13th year.

Entrants took part in three competitions, the Nalu Beads Girls’ Open, the WESC Boys’ Open and the Tiki Tag Team, with all results contributing to final placings.

This year’s winning school was Pilton Community College, who scored 3,608 points to Ilfracombe Academy’s 3,553.

Bideford came third with 3,505.

Pilton’s win was helped by Freedom Wall, who won the WESC Boys’ Open ahead of Jake Arrowsmith and Garin Clay of Braunton Academy.

Ilfracombe’s Lily Mandevill won the Nalu Beads Girls’ Open, with Pilton’s Amy Dyer coming second ahead of Bideford’s Francesca Sayer.

Bideford took the Tiki Tag Team win ahead of Ilfracombe in second, and Braunton in third.

Competition organiser Rob Whitney said: “I’d like to thank everyone who helped make this event possible, in particular all of the volunteers from Croyde Surf Club, the teachers and Nick Rees from Surfing GB.

“I’m very proud that this grass roots surf event is still going strong.”
