Barnstaple Pilot Gig Club held its second annual sprint regatta on Sunday. Eight boats from six clubs competed in the event, including crews from Appledore, Barnstaple, Ilfracombe and Torridge. Crowds gathered on The Strand, where each 1.5km race culminated. The overall regatta was won by Appledores Whitford crew, ahead of Bude and Boscastle. Torridges Kerens crew finished fourth, Barnstaples crews in Nipper and Lady Freda finished fifth and sixth, and Ilfracombes Rapparee and Rogue crews finished in seventh and eighth place. The day started with the mens A crew race, ably won by Torridge, ahead of Appledore and Bude after Ilfracombe and Boscastle were disqualified. The ladies A race followed, with Appledore finishing ahead of Ilfracombe in second, and Torridge in third. The A races were followed by the junior races, with Appledores U14s coming in second in their race, and Ilfracombes U16 crew finishing a short distance behind winners Bude in theirs. The veterans races had to be reduced due to the outgoing tide, with one mixed veterans race taking place. Sandbags on the outside of the course hindered boats on the outside, with Ilfracombes Raparee boats falling foul when in the lead. Appledore eventually took the win to seal the regatta.
