Somerset’s James Hildreth brought an XI to Westward Ho! for a special testimonial match

Bideford welcomed Somerset County Cricket Club to Westward Ho! this afternoon (Sunday).

The special T20 match was part of Somerset batsman James Hildreth’s testimonial year, with funds raised going to Childrens Hospice South West.

Somerset blasted their way to 302-8 to open proceedings, with Adam Hose, Michael Leask and Ryan Davies all surpassing 50.

Bideford put up a more than respectable reply, reaching 158-7, but ultimately lost by 144 runs in a well-spirited game.

Somerset openers Hose and Leask put up 79 runs between them before Alex Hannam bowled the latter.

Hildreth put on a quick 15 before getting caught out by Jack Ford off Michael Lemmings.

Hose and Peter Trego piled on the runs after that, adding 94 between them before Oliver Hannam stumped the former off Ford.

Ford took the wicket of Roelf van der Merwe with the next ball, but couldn’t complete a hat-trick.

Jamie and Craig Overton both featured for Somerset, with Jamie lashing a quick 22 from seven balls before being caught out by Alex Hannam off Jamie Lathwell.

Lathwell took the wicket of Davies with the next ball, but he too was denied a hat-trick.

Craig Overton was the last to go, hitting 15 from 10 balls before getting run out with the last ball of the innings.

Bideford openers Matt Shepherd and James Ford started strongly, reaching 86 before Ford was bowled by Leask on 35.

Shepherd went on to make 56 – Bideford’s highest score – but was second to go eight runs later.

The hosts kept the scoreboard ticking over with Jason Bartolo adding 21 and Oliver Hannam 17.
