North Devon Triathlon Club’s Peggy Crome earned a gold and a silver medal at the World Triathlon Championships in Australia.

Crome took part in both the sprint and standard distance events in the 75-79 age category.

Her A race – the sprint distance event – saw Crome looking to stay far enough ahead in the 20km bike section to be able to hold off American Sibyl Jacobson over the 5km run.

She managed to do just that, coming first with a time of 1hr, 41mins and 22secs. Jacobson was three minutes behind to take second and Australian Valma Lambert was third.

The tables were turned in the standard distance. Crome beat Jacobson out of the water but Jacobson came back to win the race. Crome came in with a time of 3hrs, 29mins and 36secs – seven minutes behind Jacobson.

Peggy said: “I am obviously really pleased with both results, especially the gold. To achieve this, I followed a carefully organised training schedule from my coach, Penny Rother, and underpinned this with a strength training programme planned by Tony Bailey at the 1610 Torridge Pool, Northam.

“Great Britain won a total of 20 medals of various colours in the two events and it is good to know that I won 10% of the total!”
