Overton, 23, named in the 16-man test squad by selectors today (Wednesday)

Craig Overton has been named in England’s test squad for their Ashes tour of Australia.

The 23-year-old Somerset CCC seamer from North Devon is one three uncapped players in the 16-man squad.

National Selector James Whitaker said of Overton: “Craig Overton, who like [Ben] Foakes has come through the international pathway, has been involved in the England set-up this summer with the Lions and the IT20 squad.

“He will now get his chance at test level.

“We have been impressed with the way he has led Somerset’s attack over a long period of time.

“He has taken 43 Championship wickets this summer and will relish playing in Australian conditions.”

Overton has taken more than 40 wickets in the Specsavers County Championship this season, at an average of 23.18.

The fast-bowler was called up to the England IT20 squad to face South Africa in June, but didn’t feature.

England Ashes tour of Australia kicks off on November 4 and culminates on January 8.
