Croydes Will Bailey took the under-18 boys crown in the 2016 Caravan Club British Schools Champions at Widemouth Bay, near Bude on Sunday. There were also first places for Brauntons Amy Dyer in the under-16 girls competition, and for Jack Unsworth from Westward Ho! in the under-18 boys longboard. The weekends competition was finally given the green light after postponements in Woolacombe in April and May with two days of waves forecast in one of the smallest UK swell windows. Surf conditions on Saturday offered plenty of waves, culminating in a display of stylish skills by longboarder Unsworth which were well appreciated by judges and spectators alike. Solid sets rolled in for the semi-finals and finals on Sunday, with surfers excitedly awaiting their turn to tackle the 3ft waves, which for most were overhead high. Competition was temporarily interrupted by sea fog, which cut visibility limited down to about 50 metres. But actions soon resumed, revealing much-improved surf and allowing a fantastic stretch of impressive finals which saw a team from Newquay Tretherras crowned champions.RESULTS 2016 Caravan Club British Schools Champions: Newquay Tretharras.
