Javelin thrower disappointed with Anniversary Games performance

NORTH Devon javelin thrower Izzy Jeffs set herself the challenge of reaching next year's Commonwealth Games after making an appearance at the Olympic Stadium.

The 21-year-old was handed an invite to compete at the Sainsbury's Anniversary Games at the weekend, an event to celebrate one year since London 2012.

Jeffs threw 51.65m, almost five meters short of her personal best set at the Loughborough International back in May, for eighth place in the Olympic Stadium.

But Jeffs, who represented England at the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games, was more concerned with looking forward to next year and qualifying for Glasgow.

"I should go," she said. "I have got the ability, but I just need to prove that I can do it. That's sport isn't it?

"Now I want to get bigger and I want to get better over the next couple of years. I'm going to have a couple of weeks' holiday and then come back with a vengeance.

"The Anniversary Games weren't that great but I've been working on a few things technically at the moment. I'm just excited to get into winter, sort them all out, come back and be awesome next year. I need to get a lot more consistent."

Jeffs finished 13th at the Delhi Commonwealth Games but was last among a world-class field at the Anniversary Games, Olympic silver medallist from London 2012 Christina Obergföll throwing 65.61m for victory.

And Jeffs admitted that she was taken aback by the British support in the Olympic Stadium, even though her distances didn't quite match up to the grandeur of the occasion.

"It was a great experience being in the stadium, especially as they still love British people competing - you don't have to be wearing a GB vest and they all go crazy.

"I don't even know how people would describe the atmosphere. It is just so loud, you can't hear anything - it's great."
