MIKE Wigley scored two tries as Torrington overcame Withycombe 23-20 in a nail-biter.

Torrie were 20-16 down with 15 minutes to go and glad of Wigley’s second try for putting them ahead. An opportunist try by Dom McDonald, which Paddy Shore converted, put Withies ahead.

Torrie got five points back when the ball was swung away from a line-out for Lloyd Sands to score. Two Andy Manning penalties put Torrie 11-7 up at the break - a lead stretched with a Wigley push-over try.

Shore kicked a penalty for Withycombe and a second McDonald score, plus the conversion and a penalty by Shore, made for an interesting finish. Another Wigley try off a scrum, which Manning converted, finally ended it.

Torrington are away to Totnes this Saturday.

ILFRACOMBE dropped to third in Devon Two after falling to a narrow 18-17 defeat at Old Technicians.

Combe opened the scoring with a try from Leo Cooper, converted by Dan Brierly, but tries for Techs from Phil Ingleson and Ryan Tunnicliffe sent the home side in ahead at the break.

Brierly brought scores level with a penalty, but a try from Techs’ No.8 Nick Dorrian and a Tunnicliffe penalty edged them ahead.

A converted try from Brierly brought Combe within a point, but he was unsuccessful with a late penalty which would have stolen victory for the visitors.

Combe host Plymouth Argaum this Saturday.
