North Devon Hockey Club took on University of Exeter’s sixth team on Saturday in Verde Recreo Southern One, losing 3-1 to the students.
Despite being the university’s sixth team, the students were organised and skilful in a game with a very good standard of play.
North Devon started well, with Ash Thorne firing wide after an early interception. The students began applying pressure after, with man of the match goalkeeper Sam Wormington making a string of excellent saves to keep the scores level.
Eventually Uni broke the deadlock from a penalty corner to go in ahead at the break.
The game opened up in the second half. Guy Cockroft missed a close range chance before being sent to the sin bin, with a member of the opposition soon following.
In that time the students scored their second only for Sam Kirkness to pull one back from a penalty corner.
Just as North Devon started to get back in the game, Uni grabbed their third and held on to take the win.
North Devon, fourth in Southern One, take on fifth-placed Torbay on Saturday.
North Devon A t remain undefeated after winning 4-2 away at Taunton Vale.
This was by far their toughest encounter yet and required a solid patient defence with slick quick movement in attack.
Goals came from Archie Davies, Jerry Rowe and two from Simon Allen, who was man of the match.
The result means the A Team remain at the top of the Verde Recreo South East 2.
They face Teign A at Park School on Saturday.
