Appledore and Ilfracombes pilot gig clubs represented North Devon at the Tribute Mounts Bay Regatta on Saturday.The two North Devon teams were up against some of the worlds best at the event, with Falmouth, Caradon and Fowey all taking part. Rowers were treated to a backdrop of St Michaels Mount as they took on the kite-shaped course. A strong squad meant that Ilfracombe were able to enter every race on the way to finishing sixth overall picking up a win in the mens veteran race. Appledore competed in six events, with some strong finishes against a challenging field to finish eighth overall. The first race of the day was the mens A, where Appledores crew finished in eighth ahead of Ilfracombe in 10th. It was Ilfracombe who came out on top in the mens B and C crews, finishing seventh and 10th in the same race, with Appledore finishing in 20th. Appledores ladies A crew finished ninth in their race, with Ilfracombe crossing the line in 15th. In the B and C events, Appledores crew came in 13th, with Ilfracombe 24th. Ilfracombes junior crews continue to show promise, with some excellent finishes at Mounts Bay. The U14s finished third in their race, while the U16s finished sixth. In the veterans races, Ilfracombes mens crew of Colim Emery, Richard Jeffery, Keith Barclay, Stuart Dagley, Jeremy Webb and Barry Tuner finished first, with Appledore coming in eighth. The ladies event saw Ilfracombe pipping their North Devon rivals to fourth. Appledore gave chase to their rivals to finish in fifth.
