It was a long journey back to Barnstaple after a back-and-forth game ended in a 4-3 defeat for North Devon.

North Devon Hockey Club were unable to make it back-to-back wins in GoCrea8 Conference South on Saturday.

A back-and-forth match at Redruth-based Duchy saw the home side edge a 4-3 win and send the visitors back to North Devon without any points.

The wet and windy conditions meant neither side was able to play their best hockey in the opening stages, but it was North Devon who broke the deadlock when Joe Taylor-Richards pounced on a loose ball.

But the hosts bounced back, and despite the best efforts of Sam Wormington in goal, went in 2-1 up at the break.

North Devon shuffled things around at half-time, with captain Phil Brand moving Ben Cox into midfield. Cox created chances early in the second half, and the visitors were eventually rewarded.

Guy Cockroft’s powerful cross was steered in by Ash Thorne, before the former got a goal of his own after robbing a centre-back on the baseline before firing in.

The home side weren’t done though, finding equaliser before re-taking the lead from a penalty corner.

North Devon – ninth in the table – welcome bottom-of-the-league Taunton Vale Seconds to Park School on Saturday.
