AFTER nine straight defeats in the Merit Table, Bideford Nomads finally chalked up their first victory of the season when they won 21-19 at Wessex.Good open rugby defied the basement battle tag. Nomads opened with an early Matt Cornish try that full-back Peter McMillan converted.Wessex levelled the scores on 20 minutes, but the visitors cranked up their performance with prop Mike Trengrove charging over for try number two. Stand-off Stuart Arnett-Clark adding a third try.Injuries disrupted the Nomads' second-half efforts and further casualties left them battling with 14 men until the timely return to the field of Simon Tattersall ,who needed a head wound repaired.The hosts had bounced back with two tries in the first 10 minutes of the second-half.There were great performances from Mike Powe, who saved a certain try with a flying tackle, and wingers Ryan Hickman and Richard Middleton.
