BIDEFORD Nomads opened their season with a Merit Table win over visiting Barnstaple Buccaneers, coming back from a 17-5 deficit to run out 27-17 victors in a lively game.

Barnstaple travelled short of players, but with four of the Nomads’ bench pulling on Buccs’ shirts they stormed in to a 12-0 lead, courtesy of tries from Matt Jones and Troy Hicks, who took no prisoners against their own team mates!

Richard Squire pulled a score back for the hosts, charging over from a ruck on the five-metre line.

Buccs began the second half running in another try and Nomads found themselves on the back foot, struggling to get their game together.

Going in to the final quarter Nomads trailed 17-5, until full-back Lee Faux found his running boots and in a purple patch he touched down three times to push Nomads in to a 20-17 lead.

The result remained in the balance until a final period of pressure from the home side produced a try from hooker Jason Turner, which Faux converted to put the game beyond the visitors.

Tom Philbeam put in a fine Bideford debut performance in the centre with Paul Botting and captain Geb Norris leading a strong pack that finally wore down their plucky opponents.
