A new competition, The Saunton Jug, was launched at Saunton Golf Club last week to find the top team from a wide selection of golf clubs in Cornwall, Devon, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire.

Thirty four clubs selected teams of four players whose combined handicaps did not exceed the imposed limit of forty six strokes. This was designed to create a mix of both low and higher handicappers and certainly achieved the desired result, with nine clubs fielding their resident professional, off scratch, giving greater flexibility with the other three team members.

The Jug was played as a betterball Stableford event, with one pair from each club on both Saunton's East and West courses.

The overall result was a nail biting affair, with only two points separating the top six teams.

Home club Saunton took the honours, but only after a close countback with visiting Clevedon from Somerset.

Results:1, Saunton, Devon 83 pts (back nine 41); 2, Clevedon, Somerset 83 (back nine 40); 3, Marlborough, Wiltshire 82; 4, Taunton and Pickeridge, Somerset 81 (back nine 41); 5, Bude, Cornwall 81 (back nine 38); 6, Long Ashton, Gloucester 81 (back nine 34).
