Lottery cash helps set up new Y-Sail dinghy club project through Ilfracombe Yacht Club
YOUNG sailors of the future can now set their sights on far horizons following the launch of Ilfracombe Yacht Club’s new “Y Sail” project.
The new dinghy club was made possible after the club received £10,000 Lottery funding from Sport England’s Small Grants Programme.
Saturday and Sunday saw a launch weekend and the opportunity for young people who might never have sailed before to try their hand in the calm waters of the harbour.
On hand to support the launch and encourage the young sailors was one of the world’s top yachtsmen, Vendée Globe non-stop around the world race competitor Steve White.
The club has had help from many areas of the community as it works to raise the profile and opportunity to sail for local youngsters, with young people from Ilfracombe Arts College already getting involved.
“Ilfracombe yacht club is a strong local club but we’re always looking to attract more young members,” said commodore Dave Welch.
“Our project is opening up our club and giving young people along with their parents the opportunity to sail both for fun and competitively. We’re delighted to have received Lottery funding to make it all happen.”
Tom Andrews from Sport England added: “The opportunity to try a new sport for the first time is often all a person needs to catch the sporting bug. The ‘Y-Sail’ project is a great way for young people to try sailing and have a quality sporting experience that will encourage them to stay involved.”
