North Devon players made an outstanding contribution in the line-up for the Exeter team that took bronze in the National Water Polo Club Championships.
Sam Wordley and Rob Squire took part in the finals, while clubmate Will Hutchens made his contribution in the preliminary rounds.
Exeter’s U17s were initially written off by larger clubs competing in the 2013 national championships. But they scraped through the preliminary rounds early in the year, coming fourth in their group to reach the quarter-finals.
They beat Croydon and Watford in the quarters and then travelled to play Manchester in the semi-finals, a team which has 11 of its 13 players who take part in Great Britain training.
Plucky Exeter went two goals up and were still in contention at half-time, with the scores level. Despite a hard fought second-half Exeter lost 14-8, the narrowest margin recorded against the eventual champions of 2013.
In the play-offs for third place Exeter beat last year’s champions Lancester 14-12 to take the bronze medal.
