Misfits are off to a flyer in Division 1 of the North Devon Table Tennis League with Peter Kneil and Keith Le Milliere both winning their three matches and only dropping one game each all evening.

Ian Rice did really well for Knights, beating Martyn Beer and then with Gerald Luscombe taking the doubles.

Last season’s champions Torrington A started their campaign with a win over Smugglers, Kevin Taylor unbeaten and Ben Taylor supporting with a pair, that was matched by Pete Dunstans for Smugglers.

All three games in Division 2 ended 7-3, so the position was determined by individual games won and lost.

Hartland Terriers have added Alan Briggs to their line up this year and he scored a treble on his debut against Hopefuls.

Torrington B, with Tim Strand back in harness, found the going tough against Mad Batters, for whom John Broomfield and Robin Gale, newly arrived from Herons, scored trebles.

Wooden spoonists last season, Littleham beat Dolphins. Mike Bellew scored a hat trick and Alan Pomeroy and Mike Stevens also pitched in.

The first competition of the year was completed, the pre-season warm-up Up/Down Doubles attracted 25 players. The final was won by Kevin Taylor and Tim Cooke over Alan Briggs and John Broomfield.

There is a new league starting in North Devon aimed at young players and those who would like an informal introduction to league table tennis, regardless of age or standard.

Currently there are five teams involved, two each at Northam and Tarka Tennis Centre and one at Instow. The league is called the North Devon Table Tennis Club 3rd Division and anyone interested in taking part should contact Alan Pemberton on 01271 373379.
