THE annual David Hickman Charity Trophy rugby match between Bideford and Torrington was won by Bideford 26-14.The entertaining local derby had plenty of spice, but was played in the spirit for which it was intended and in aid of the charity SPIRE, which supports former players with disabilities.Dave had played for both teams before being tragically killed in a road traffic accident at the beginning of last season. The game was watched by some 200 supporters in freezing conditions, with one half of the pitch remaining solid throughout, but the outcome rewarded the hardy. After 20 minutes of deadlock Bideford scrum half Nick Giddy crossed for the opening try, which was converted by Rob Patterson.Further tries from captain Mike Powe and Tim Priest, plus another Patterson conversion took Bideford to a 19-0 lead. But Torrington's 'never say die' attitude resulted in two tries in the last 20 minutes, the first by Andy Manning and the other by Stuart West, with Manning converting both. Squeezed between these scores was another Bideford try, by Chris Bailey, converted by Patterson.Cameo performances from Shaun Henry on the Torrington wing and Tony Bottrill for Bideford, both after many years retirement, added to the spectacle.Man of the match for Bideford was Toby Richards, but at the end of the day victory was declared for local rugby and the memory of a fine friend and player, Dave Hickman. The trophy was presented by Dave's parents, Nancy and Peter, who were joined by other members of the family. The afternoon raised £408 for SPIRE.
