Barnstaple Town translated their fine start to the league season into FA Cup success on Saturday.
Town made it through to the Emirates FA Cup preliminary round by beating Southern League side Bridgwater Town by two goals to nil.
Barnstaple started like a house on fire, and nearly went in front in the second minute when striker Ryan Turner got free, only to see his effort saved.
Turner didn’t have to wait long to get on the score sheet, though. A Jed Harper-Penman cross was nodded home to give Town the lead inside of five minutes.
Bridgwater came back into the game after the goal, but rarely troubled Barnstaple’s well-drilled defence.
And it was Barnstaple who scored next. Jack Jenkins’ free kick caused havoc in the away penalty area, and it was Turner who was on the spot again to fire in his second of the game.
Barnstaple had chances to extend the lead further in the second half, but the two first-half goals proved enough to see Barry Yeo’s side through on a fine day at Mill Road.
It wasn’t a perfect day for Yeo, though - he watched as substitute Niall Heeney was sent off just five minutes after coming on.
Town will face Poole Town away from home in the next round on September 12.
