Torridgeside and Ilfracombe Town are through to the second round of the Walter C Parson Cup after winning their respective opening matches on Saturday.
Torridgeside go up against East Division league leaders Elmore in the next round of the competition after beating University of Exeter 3-1 at Donnacroft, but it wasn’t as comfortable as the scoreline suggests.
Brian Levien and Neil Bettis scored just before half-time to give the hosts a 2-0 lead at the break.
Kyle Paine added the third for T-Side with 20 minutes remaining before the Students pulled one back through George O’Neil.
Manager Barry Paine said: “They were a totally different Exeter Uni team to the one we played at the start of the season – a lot better and a lot sharper.
“It was a hard game, and we did well in the end.
“The chances were probably equal but we were that little bit more clinical in the final third, and we scored three good goals.
“But if that’s their team for the rest of the season they’ll do well and get some scalps.”
Ilfracombe met Budleigh Salterton, who are yet to pick up a point in the East Division, and eased into the next round with a 4-1 win.
Sam Box’s goalscoring run for the Bluebirds continued, with the striker scoring a hat-trick in the win, and there was a goal for Lee Roy Cochrane in his first start this season.
The Bluebirds are in action against Appledore tonight. The Fishermen were beaten 1-0 by Ilfracombe’s next opponents in the Walter C Parson Cup on Saturday.
Teignmouth came out on top against the Fishermen at Marshford, with Matthew Eves scoring the goal for the visitors.
Saturday’s East Division action sees Appledore hosting Axminster Town, Ilfracombe travelling to Elmore and Torridgeside with a home game against Budleigh Salterton.
In the West Division, Holsworthy are at home to Penzance.
