HUNDREDS of senior men and women footballers took part in the 24th annual six-a-side football tournament at North Molton at the weekend.The event - sponsored by Bideford-based independent sports retailer Sports Fore You - featured 35 men's teams and 18 ladies' sides during two days of first-class football at Rocksfield.Winners of the men's tournament were Great Blokes, from Appledore, who beat South Molton-based college boys Incredibles in the final.The winning ladies' team was Alphington, who beat Cullompton 2-0 in the final."The quality of football was superb over the whole weekend," said tournament organiser Alan Webster."Despite the hot weather conditions, all the players showed a good attitude and during 130 games of football, we only had one sending off."Juniors nextThis weekend sees the turn of the junior sides in a two-day competition on Saturday and Sunday at the same venue.The tournament will feature 120 teams from as far away as Portsmouth, Nailsea in Somerset and Hasbury in the West Midlands, competing against a host of local teams from 10.15am on both days. The finals will take place from 3-5pm.Saturday will feature teams from under 8s, 10s, 12s and 14s, while on Sunday, the competition gets underway for under 9s, 11s, 13s and 15s.
