ILFRACOMBE Town blew a quick-fire 2-0 lead as Bishop Sutton came back to rescue a point in the Toolstation Western League Premier Division on Saturday.
The Bluebirds bagged one of the fastest goals ever scored at Marlborough Park to take a 1-0 lead just 16 seconds after kick-off.
Leon Taswell doubled the advantage from the spot five minutes later but in the end, the hosts failed to capitalise on their advantage and had to settle for the draw.
Latecomers were still shuffling through the turnstiles when Taswell pounced on a poor Sutton backpass to present Shaun Lewis with an easy tap-in to get 'Combe off to a dream start.
Taswell fluffed a chance to double the advantage on three minutes but redemption soon came in the form of a penalty kick after a Sutton player was ruled to have handled in the box.
The spot-kick successfully dispatched, a crowd of just over 100 could be forgiven for thinking this was going to be their side's day.
But as quickly as 'Combe's challenge had begun, it soon started to unravel under increasing pressure from a Sutton side that found its feet as the half wore on.
Goalkeeper Steve Oliver was called on to make saves from former Bristol City striker Darren Hawkins and Kye Holly but despite getting close, Oliver was unable to prevent Holly from scoring from the penalty spot after James Mayne fouled in the box.
While Lewis and Taswell were unlucky not to extend Ilfracombe's lead in the second half, Sutton got their equaliser in the 73rd minute when Hawkins fired a sublime shot over Oliver's head to set up an exciting finish.
Each had goals disallowed by the assistant referee, there was a straight red card for a two-footed lunge by Steve Holland, and Lewis saw the final shot of the match well saved by keeper Chris Blammon.
Barnstaple also had to settle for a draw as they came from behind to rescue a point in their match at Brislington.
Carl Foster's debut goal six minutes from the end cancelled out Kevin Camargo's goal at the end of a scrappy first half.
Barnstaple are away to Longwell Green in the league on Saturday before a trip to Dawlish on Tuesday .
Ilfracombe travel to Wellington tonight and will entertain Western League Division One side Hengrove Athletic in the first round of the FA Vase on Saturday.
