Unbeaten Bideford boast the North Devon League’s only 100 per cent record
BIDEFORD Reserves bagged their second 8-0 win of the week to take charge at the top of the North Devon Gazette Senior table on Saturday.
The Robins followed up the previous weekend’s 8-0 mauling of Barnstaple AAC Reserves with an identical return against North Molton Reserves.
The Stags were powerless to break down the dominance of Chris Smailes’ side, who made it five wins from five with a hat-trick by Nathan Bate and doubles by Ben Ford and Sam Stephens. Sam Grimley was also on target at Rocksfield.
Bideford retain the only 100 per cent record left across all four divisions.
Smailes, who has reunited a raft of former team mates in forming a completely new squad this season, said he was pleased with the way his side had clicked in the opening weeks of the campaign.
“The team is made of old mates who have got back together again after playing for different clubs and it seems to be working so far,” he said.
With the rest of the division on Firewatch Senior Cup duty, Braunton Reserves beat Bude 5-2 in the day’s only other league match.
Rivals will have wish they’d also focused their attentions on the league as all those who played suffered first round defeats.
Park United were beaten 5-2 at Newtown, while there were home defeats for Shamwickshire Rovers, Chittlehampton, Barnstaple AAC Reserves and Lynton and Lynmouth.
Pilton Academicals, Northam Lions and Torrington all faced lengthy away trips and conceded their ties without kicking a ball.
Only South Molton, Braunton Reserves; Wrey Arms, Bideford Reserves and Woolsery remain in the competition courtesy of round one byes.
Firewatch Senior Cup Round 2 draw (Ties to be played Saturday, October 8):
South Molton v Waldon Athletic; Newton Abbot 66 v Braunton; Witheridge Res v Vospers Oak Villa; Wrey Arms v Colaton Raleigh; Whipton & Pinhoe v Holsworthy; Newtown v Bideford; Woolsery v Newton Abbot Spurs
