Barnstaple Town left it late on Saturday before snatching a point against Ashton and Backwell United.

Substitute Will Nicholls fired home in the 93rd minute for the home side to earn a draw with fifth-placed Ashton.

And, having never led throughout the match, it will certainly feel like a point gained rather than two points dropped for Town in the Toolstation Western League First Division title race.

Ashton first went ahead on 15 minutes, but that lead would only last for a matter of moments.

Striker Dave Pearse lashed in from a Billy Tucker free-kick just three minutes later to put Barnstaple back on terms.

The goals continued to pour in, though, and the visitors were back in front only two minutes later when a floated free-kick was poorly dealt with by the Barnstaple back line.

Ashton maintained that lead until half-time, and sure enough league leaders Barnstaple came out firing in the second period.

It took them until the hour mark to draw level again, this time through a terrific solo effort from top scorer Ryan Turner.

But Barnstaple fell behind for a third time after that, and looked to be heading for a first defeat in the league since August.

Town threw everything at Ashton, and three minutes into stoppage time substitute Will Nicholls provided the crucial touch to poke Barnstaple level and win them a point.

The dramatic draw leaves Barnstaple two points clear at the top of the table, ahead of a trip to Hengrove Athletic on Saturday.
