Ilfracombe Town got off to a positive start with a 2-2 draw in their first pre-season game at home to a young and energetic South West Peninsula premier league side Bovey Tracey. Combe had ten players missing but named a 17 man squad including 6 new players. Luke Evans, Lewis Ovey, Jamie Bright and Frank Paxton all started the match with Rob Holland and Chris Webber coming off the bench in the second half to make their debuts. Combe looked solid at the back and lively on the break with the two Paxtons linking up well with Shaun Copp and Steve Holland. All four combined before Holland and F.Paxton played a double one-two which resulted in a Holland shot deflecting in. Combes second goal was a stunning strike from debutant Jamie Bright. The ball found him on edge of the box and he unleashed a sweet left footed half volley which flew in off the post. Both Bovey goals were avoidable as far as Combe were concerned, but the result was probably fair given the number of chances the two sides made. Ilfracombe manager Ross Middleton said The first game is always tough especially in that heat. Im pleased with the overall performance, theyre a very good team who try and play in the right way and it was a tough test. Theres a few things we need to go away and work on but its never going to be perfect over night so thats expected. Im happy with the lads, we played some great football at times and looked a real threat going forward. We had a few making debuts and they all did very well, its a new way of playing and they adapted to it well. Brighty might never score a better goal with his left foot but hopefully hes got a few more in his locker!
