Pilton Academicals shrugged off the disappointment of a crushing Devon county cup final defeat to taste league cup glory on Saturday night. Two cup finals in three days this week proved bittersweet for the North Devon Gazette League Intermediate One side. The Accies had one hand on the Buddens Westinsure Devon Intermediate Cup but were beaten 6-2 by WBW Solicitors South Devon Football League side Roselands in Newton Abbot on Thursday night. They led the match 2-0 with a Luke Holland penalty after Quyen Tran was tripped in the box on 20 minutes. Tran then made it 2-0 with a superb effort after linking up well with Matt Hunt. But having taken a firm grip of the game against strong opposition, Pilton conceded themselves in half-time injury a goal they were never really able to recover from. Danny Rainbows header was the first of four headed goals to follow in a second half dominated by a resurgent Roseland. But Pilton bounced back in style with a 3-0 Arlington Cup final win against Braunton Thirds at Bidefords Sports Ground 48 hours later. They dominated possession in a match of very few chances but needed extra-time to break down a disciplined Braunton defence. There was a good slice of fortune in the first goal, which flew straight in at the near post from Trans corner kick in the first half of the extra period. Holland then stepped up to dispatch his third penalty kick in a week after substitute Paul Sullivan was brought down in the box. And man-of-the-match Sullivan capped a lively contribution from the bench to notch the Accies third goal in the second half of extra time.
