The hour is nigh for Western League teams Barnstaple and Ilfracombe, who both start their league campaigns on Saturday.

Barnstaple’s warm-up continued with a 3-2 win against multi North Devon League champions Boca Seniors last Friday night.

Town once again fell 2-0 behind, but came back well to gain the result with a hat-trick from Danny Jenkins.

While Boca used the match to run out some 20 players, Barnstaple were sparing in their changes as manager Dave Griffiths tested his squad over the full 90 minutes.

He was pleased with the result and confident that fitness levels have risen well.

“We have come on leaps and bounds in the past two weeks,” he said. “Our main aim has been to foster togetherness in the team - every goal that goes against us hurts us all and every goal we score is enjoyed as a team.”

Barnstaple kick-off their Western League programme at home to Bridport on Saturday, ko 3pm.

Ilfracombe had a warm-up against their own reserves on Tuesday night before opening their season on Saturday with a tough tie away to Bitton, last season’s Premier Division runners-up.

Next Tuesday they have another league match at home to Street.
