Barnstaple Town are out of the FA Vase following a tight 2-1 defeat at Hengrove Athletic.

Jed Harper-Penman netted a lovely opener to put Barnstaple in front in the first half, but Barry Yeo’s men were below their best and the hosts were soon level after half-time thanks to a Matt Durbin goal.

That came from a long ball forward which Town failed to deal with properly.

Barry Yeo’s men would still have been confident of getting the win against the Toolstation Western League Division One side, but things didn’t go their way after the equaliser without the attacking threat of absent top-scorer Ryan Turner.

They came close a few times, but in the end it was another long ball which undid Barnstaple’s usually meagre defence.

With less than 10 minutes left to play, Mark Fear took his chance to send home side Hengrove into round three.

Barnstaple are set to return to league action this weekend, travelling to Bradford Town on Saturday.
