Barnstaple Town 1-1 Cribbs

More than 200 people filed into Mill Road on Saturday to watch top-of-the-table Barnstaple Town take on their closest challengers, Cribbs.

Town knew that a win would put them firmly in the box seat in the race for the Toolstation Western League first division title, but they were ultimately forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against the in-form visitors.

Barnstaple started very brightly indeed, forcing a corner with the first passage of play.

The delivery was a good one, and Dave Pearse was able to head home to give his side the lead in the first minute.

The game became a tight affair from then on, with both sides struggling to create openings for the remainder of the first half.

Cribbs continued to grow into the game in the second half, and soon found themselves level thanks to a moment of pure magic.

Shaughnessy hammered the ball into the top corner from all of 35 yards to silence the home crowd and level the scores.

Neither side was quite able to push on and claim all three points, but a draw is still a good result for Barnstaple in the wider context of the league table.

Barry Yeo’s side are still four points clear at the top with a game in hand on Cribbs, though Welton Rovers moved closer to the top two with a 2-0 win at Devizes Town.

That result leaves them five points off Town, having played a game fewer than the pace-setters.

Barnstaple are away to 16th-placed Devizes Town, who have only won eight games this season, on Saturday.
