Braunton have won the North Devon Gazette Premier Division title for the first time in more than a decade.

The perennial bridesmaids – regular runners-up and at least top five finishers every year since they last won it in 2003/04 – beat Appledore Reserves 6-0 on Saturday to claim the elusive silverware.

On Wednesday night, Braunton, unbeaten since a 2-0 Valentine’s Day defeat at Torridgeside, beat Ilfracombe Town Reserves 2-0 with two goals by Sam Box. The fiery encounter saw no less than five yellow cards, including a red card for Ilfracombe’s Rob Taylor.

The wins meant rivals Boca Seniors were unable to catch them, even with a game in hand. Instead, they were dished out their biggest hiding in years, slumping to a 9-2 defeat at Torridgeside.

They had few complaints, and by their own admission were outplayed and outclassed against top opponents. Scott Sharp scored the consolation coals for Boca, who need a win in the weekend’s double header against Torrington and Bradworthy to secure second spot.

Braunton will now look to complete a league and cup double when they face Torridgeside in the Brayford Cup final at Vicarage Field, Torrington on May 9.
