Downing was off the mark from close range after just 12 minutes in snowy Stroud and added another three in the second half as the Robins made it three wins from three in all competitions this month. But the visitors were made to wait and work hard for the second, Steve Oliver called into action on a number of occasions in the first half. Breathing space at the Meadowbank Ground finally came on 62 minutes when defender James Mayne headed home Matt Byes corner. Kevin Squire made it 3-0 five minutes later and the goals really began to flow as Bideford sensed their opponents were on the ropes. Downing headed his second from a Bye free kick a minute later and completed his hat-trick 15 minutes from time, finding the finish after being put through by Squire. Downing followed up a blocked Stephen Reed effort on 84 minutes to score his fourth and Bidefords sixth. Bidefords push for a play-off place will continue at home to Mangotsfield United tomorrow night (Tuesday). On Saturday the Robins are at home to Salisbury before a trip to Bristol Manor Farm next Tuesday night.
