Barnstaple Town’s wait for their first points of the Evo-Stik Division One South season stretched to nine games as they were defeated again at Mill Road this afternoon (Saturday).
Barum were on the wrong end of a 2-0 scoreline against Larkhall Athletic, but the final result did not do the home side justice.
Substitute Wayne Nderemani scored with his first touch of the game 20 minutes from time with a goal against the run of play.
Harry Hope rubbed salt into Barnstaple wounds seven minutes later with a beautiful strike from 25 yards.
It was a frustrating game to lose for Barum, who struck the woodwork twice in five seconds 10 minutes into the second half.
The result, along with Fleet Town’s defeat to Mangotsfield and Moneyfields not playing means not much has changed at the bottom for Barnstaple.
Barnstaple had the better of the first half but were unable to hit the target and trouble Larkhall keeper Shaun Semmens.
Jack Rice-Lethaby caused problems for the visitors’ defence, and had the first real chance of the game when his shot from a narrow angle came off the outside of the post. Jack Jenkins was off target minutes later after he was teed up by Jordan Charran.
The Larks had chances of their own, with Lewis Powell flashing one wide from the edge of the box, and a long range shot from Matt Groves saw Rob Holmes diving across his goal as the ball went wide.
Barum began the second half brightly, and were inches away from taking the lead nine minutes after the break.
Kyle Darragh’s cross was met in the air by Barnstaple man of the match George Nancekivell, who thundered a header off the inside of the post. The deflection fell to Jack Jenkins at the back post, but his strike came off the crossbar.
Barum’s hopes of earning their first points of the season were left deflated 15 minutes later when Nderemani gave Larkhall the lead a minute after entering the match as a replacement for Matt Groves.
His first touch of the game was the one to turn in Alex Lambert’s cross, with the midfielder robbing James Spence of the ball on the touchline before sending his cross into the penalty area.
Nderemani hit the bar five minutes later with a shot from the edge of the box and minutes after that Hope made sure of all three points for the visitors with a well taken goal.
After driving down the left channel, Hope cut in on his right foot and launched a shot from 25 yards out of Holmes’ reach and into the top corner.
