Barnstaple Town suffered their third defeat in a row in Evo-Stik Division One South this afternoon (Saturday) at the hands of AFC Totton.
Barum were second best all afternoon as they were beaten 4-0 at Mill Road. Craig Feeney scored a brace for the visitors, who raced into a 3-0 lead early on.
Feeney was first the provider for Alex Haynes, who gave Totton the lead after nine minutes. Goals in the 18th and 25th minutes from the striker ended the game as a contest with more than an hour left to play.
Substitute Stuart Green added a fourth with five minutes of the match remaining.
The result leaves Barnstaple at the foot of the Division One South table.
The deadlock was broken after nine minutes when Haynes managed to turn in a low cross from Feeney and squeeze it past Rob Holmes at the near post.
There had been warning signs for Barnstaple before the goal. Feeney headed over the bar after meeting a cross from Matthew Bozier, and minutes later the visitors had an effort at goal cleared off the line, although the Totton players expected a goal to be awarded.
After Haynes gave them the lead, Feeney took the game away from Barnstaple with two strikes in the space of seven minutes. He made it 2-0 after a ball from Justin Bennett found him in enough space to put a low shot under Holmes after 18 minutes.
The striker got his second and Totton’s third after Bennett’s header put him through one on one with Holmes. The Barnstaple goalkeeper got a touch to Feeney’s shot, but not enough to stop the ball from nestling in the bottom corner.
With the damage done in the first half, the game drifted after the break. George Nancekivell had Barnstaple’s first real sight on goal after 54 minutes, getting a powerful header on target to draw a diving save from Adam Siviter.
Siviter was forced into action again 15 minutes later to parry away a driven free kick from Stephen Reed from the edge of the penalty area.
Green came close for the visitors with five minutes left to play, sending a looping header over Rob Holmes, but James Dart was able to recover and clear the ball away before it crossed the line.
It didn’t matter though, as a minute later the substitute met a Feeney cross to side-foot the ball in from close range and make it 4-0 to the Hampshire side.
Siviter produced another diving save to stop a glancing header from Harry Stevens, and with it a consolation goal for the home side.
