Barnstaple Town moved up to second in the Toolstation Western League Premier after a 2-0 win at home to Longwell Green Sports. Captain Aaron Harper-Penman gave Barum the lead inside ten minutes before Dave Pearse took advantage of a defensive mix up to make it two with 15 minutes remaining. It was the perfect end to a busy week for Barnstaple, who were in action less than 48 hours since their 2-0 win away at Gillingham Town. It didnt take long for the home side to open the scoring, when Harper-Penman got on the end of Liam Gregorys corner to nod the ball in at the back post. Barnstaple continued to press, with Gregory a often proving a menace for the Longwell defence, and getting goal-side of Liam Oswin and George Thrushell. The hosts were not able to extend their lead in the first half though, and at times looked impatient in open play. However, they also didnt look like conceding. The back three of Scott Huxtable, James Mayne and Harper-Penman didnt allow Longwell Green to build possession, and stifled their attacks with some exceptional tackling. Barnstaple started to threaten a little more in the second half. Dave Pearse looked like he was going to double Barums lead when he rounded keeper Ben Reed, only for his shot to hit the side-netting. He eventually got his goal after 75 minutes when he charged down Reeds clearance and was left with nothing else to do but head the ball into the empty net. Pearse made way for Ryan Turner five minutes later, with the forward seeing his first action since limping off against Buckland Athletic on Easter Monday. Turner came through the final 15 minutes unscathed, and combined well with fellow substitute Scott Sharp.
