Barnstaple Town’s first pre-season match of the summer was abandoned after less than 15 minutes on Friday.

Barum welcomed Braunton to Mill Road in the first friendly of seven before the Evo-Stik Division One South season gets underway.

Dave Griffiths and Kevin Darch’s side had worked their way into a 1-0 lead through Harry Stevens before a serious injury to Braunton’s Tom White brought the game to an end.

White suffered a fractured and dislocated ankle while going in for a challenge after his foot appeared to get caught in the firm ground. The game was abandoned before the ambulance arrived.

Speaking after the game’s abandonment, Darch said: “I just feel sorry for the lad really. It’s one of those things and we just wish him a speedy recovery.

“Both sides just wanted a nice little training game to have a look at our players and with that happening it’s a shame. I just hope he makes a quick recovery.”

After a season blighted by heavy rain and extreme weather, Barum are now in the rare position of hoping for some rain at Mill Road to help soften the pitch up before their next home game, against Boreham Wood on Thursday, July 19.

Before then Barnstaple travel to Cullompton Rangers for their next friendly, with kick-off on Friday at 7.45pm.
