Barnstaple Town 3-1 Portishead Town

BARNSTAPLE were made to work hard for the three points by bottom of the table Portishead Town at Mill Road on Saturday.

Town went behind in the first half when Kieron Marsden headed home from a corner to give the visitors a surprise lead.

Barnstaple turned up the pressure but an equaliser was still not forthcoming until Ryan Turner bizarrely managed to charge down a kick from Portishead ‘keeper Mike Bawn and tap into an empty net.

Portishead continued to press, though, and thought they had retaken the lead moments later, only for the effort to be chalked off for offside.

And it was another offside decision at the opposite end which led Portishead to further rue their luck, with Billy Tucker hitting the post with a glancing header before Jack Jenkins turned the ball in from inside the penalty area.

Ross Jones added a third for the home side in injury time to make the points secure and help Barnstaple up to sixth in the First division of the Toolstation Western League.

The win may not have come as easily as Town would have expected, but they were able to get the result they needed to continue their promotion challenge heading into the final months of the season.

Barnstaple will hope to continue their good run of form when they travel to Calne Town on Saturday.
