A moment of magic from Joe Barker was enough to earn Appledore the Throgmorton Devon Premier Cup. The Fishermen beat Newton Abbot Spurs 1-0 last night (Thursday) at Coach Road to get their hands on the trophy for the first time since 2010. In a tight contest, it was Barkers chip after 56 minutes that was the difference between the two sides. The forward was lively from the off, challenging the Newton Abbot defence in the first two minutes when he almost seized a wayward backpass. He popped up again a few minutes later, attempting to chip Spurs goalkeeper Scott Bellamy. Despite the early chances, the match was goalless at half-time, with both sides erring on the side of caution. Barker struck 11 minutes after the restart, taking down a long ball from Brian Levein before sending a beautiful lob over Bellamy and into the net. Appledore remained assured in possession after the goal, and Spurs were unable to come close to equalising until stoppage time, when goalkeeper Joe Tickle kept the ball out to survive a goalmouth scramble.
