Park United were the winners of the Albert Beer Memorial Shield on Saturday. Park beat Ilfracombe Town 1-0 in the North Devon Football League curtain-raiser at Appledores Marshford ground. Phill Kelly scored the decisive goal 10 minutes into the second half when he nodded in a Ricky Marinaro corner at the back post. In a match between two well-organised sides, there were few clear-cut chances for either team. Nathan Knight went closest for Ilfracombe in the first half when his free-kick from 25 yards bounced back off the crossbar. Minutes later David Brown forced a save at the other end. After Kellys second-half goal, Park twice hit the woodwork but were unable to extend their lead. For Ilfracombe, it was a second defeat in as many days after a 2-0 defeat to Buckland Athletic Reserves in the Throgmorton Champions Cup final on Friday night. The Bluebirds will look to regroup before their South West Peninsula League Division One East bow on Saturday against St Martins. Park begin their North Devon Football League Premier season at Fremington on August 19.
