Flanker Sam Howard’s last-minute score looked to have secured a dramatic win for South Molton but the resulting conversion was missed, leaving Topsham to hold on for an 18-17 win.
South Molton hit straight back after going behind as No.8 Dan Smith picked up a loose ball from the restart and powered over.
Jamie Stoneman’s conversion levelled the scores, but by half time Tops were 13-7 up.
Topsham extended their advantage, but South Molton skipper Courtney Lucas scored a try to keep his side within range before Howard’s late score which almost snatched a dramatic victory for the visitors.
South Molton are at home to Dartmouth in the Devon Junior Cup on Saturday.
