Ladies record string of fine results for Ilfracombe Pilot Gig Club
ILFRACOMBE Pilot Gig Club picked up a number of promising results at this weekend’s Mevagissey Tribute regatta – despite several rowers missing the event for father’s day.
The first day of a perfect weekend saw rowers compete in a long race, which should have been almost an hour long but had to be cut to 30 minutes due to the intense heat.
There were more than 20 crews doing battle and the ladies B were first up kicking off with a seventh place finish.
The depleted men’s crew got 15th and the ladies A put in a great performance to take eighth place with great power coming from Sarah Eveleigh and Karis Turner.
Then there were a series of three sprint races per crew to take the aggregate score. By this point, the crews and coxes were all suffering from the heat but all put in a great show to achieve more good results.
The ladies B were seventh, ladies A 11th and the men’s crew 13th.
On the Sunday, there was the final race which was on a ‘kite course’, consisting of three turns on the stroke side, which was approximately 20 minutes long.
The cloudier, choppier conditions played into Ilfacombe’s hands, with the ladies A crew battling all the way to beat Fowey and the home crew of Mevagissey on their way to sixth.
The ladies B also did well in their final race to come fourth, with a fantastic race by Gail Clemence and good power from Liz Garnett and Sarah Barclay. The crew were delighted to come fourth, beating crews well above them in the world rankings.
